Lake Trasimeno represents one of the most suggestive places in Umbria not only for its lake but also for its strongholds, castles and parishes present in the eight towns surrounding this suggestive lake environment.
Castiglione del Lago has ancient medieval walls and the XVI-century municipal palace that was built by Ascanio della Corgna.
Città della Pieve is a town founded in the Early Middle Ages, with the name of Castrus Plebis, and it was the hometown of Pietro Vannucci called "Il Perugino".
Magione with the "Castello del Sovrano Militare Ordine di Malta", built in the XII century, houses XVI-century frescoes painted by Pinturicchio's school.
Paciano is located on the spur of Petravella, where a temple dedicated to the god Janus existed in the ancient times. It keeps its medieval appearance unaltered as it is highlighted by its XIV-century municipal palace and by its embattled "Torre d'Orlando".
Panicale is the most beautiful natural terrace in Umbria. It overlooks Lake Trasimeno, on one side, and the wide valley of the river Nestore, on the other. The sanctuary of the "Madonna di Mongiovino" belongs to this territory.
Passignano, that derives from "Passum Jani" (Pass of Iano) is constituted of many intertwining narrow streets climbing from the lake banks to the towers of the upper side.
Piegaro is surrounded by woods of Turkey oaks and downy oaks and it houses the medieval village of Cibottola, where one of the first Franciscan convents was built.
The centre of Tuoro was born in the Late Middle Ages and rises in the territory that was the theatre of one of the most ruinous and mythical battles of antiquity, namely Hannibal's battle.
