Perugia and its surroundings
Art and history
Besides including the regional capital, the territory of Perugia comprises the small towns of Corciano, Torgiano and Deruta that have always been linked to Perugia, from a political, economic and social point of view.
Perugia overlooks an area scattered with fortified towns, some of which are very small, and with sighting turrets. Its countryside is full of parishes, chapels and sacred aedicule. The presence of a municipal palace and of a square is constant in all of them.
Corciano is an ancient small town that rises on a hill at 13 kilometres from Perugia and lays along the road that links the regional capital to Lake Trasimeno. It is a typical medieval village set on a hill. From above the town, the castle dominates the labyrinth of small streets that lead to the most important squares.
Deruta is located at 15 Km south of Perugia on a hill overlooking the valley of the Tiber. Here, there is the Museum of pottery, where wonderful examples of ancient local majolicas are exposed.
Torgiano is an ancient village at few kilometres from Perugia. It rises on the hills overlooking the valley where the river Chiascio flows into the Tiber. This town keeps the remains of its ancient walls and a beautiful guard tower that has become the symbol of the country during the centuries. The town's territory is constituted of low hills that have been used for the cultivation of vines and olives since the ancient times.
