Spoleto and the Valnerina

One of the most suggestive and spectacular places in the territory of Spoleto is constituted by the Clitunno Springs. They create a small lake and the count Paolo Campello took care of its current appearance.

In the ancient times, the water of the lake was far more abundant and the river was bigger. The emperor Caligula could sail against the current when he came here to question the famous oracles of the Clitunno, the river's god. At that time, a small temple and other sepulchral chapels rose on its banks.

Virgilio and Properzio celebrated the supernatural properties of these waters that could whiten the oxen that plunged into it before being immolate. Nevertheless, Pliny the Younger made the most detailed description of this place in his famous letter. In the modern age, the Clitunno Springs were depicted by Corot and sung by Byron and Carducci. Sport and nature lovers' favourite place is the Valnerina.

In this unpolluted place, all the activities are carried out in the wonderful landscapes of the Mounts Sibillini National Park, of Mount Coscerno and Mount Aspra's territory and of the Valley of the Nera.

Here are some of the activities that it is possible to perform in this area: rafting, free climbing, paragliding, trekking, hiking, survival, orienteering, horse ridings, canyoning, excursions with donkeys and mules, speleology, hang-gliding kayak, mountain bike, photographic safari, tree climbing and Tibetan bridge.
