Todi and the Middle Valley of the Tiber

Food and wine

The great wine-growing and wine-producing tradition of this territory, along with many other ones, earned it the recognition of two AOC and AOCG productions. They are denominations reserved to those wines that meet the conditions and the requisites established by a particular disciplinary production board. The AOC Colli Martani, with the specification of one of these three grape varieties, Trebbiano, Grechetto, Sangiovese, is reserved to wines obtained by grapes coming from their respective grape varieties.

The area of production of the AOC Colli Martani includes a vast area to the North-East, to the South and to the South-West of the homonymous hills' crest going northward from Massa Martana to Bettona. According to tradition, the "prince" of wines is without a doubt the dry or "passito" Sagrantino. Not only is this land a wine-producing place, it is also an oil-producing one.

This is the case of Giano dell'Umbria, the town of oil, that Saint Francis described as "jucunda", covered with olive yards.

Giano's territory in Umbria is almost completely characterized by quality agriculture. It includes three areas with checked origin name, two of them for wine and the other for its extra-virgin oil that has had the AOP label since 1998. The Mounts Martani DOP oil is a very good extra-virgin oil obtained from Moraiolo, S. Felice, Leccino, Frantoio and other olive varieties.
